Ear Plugs Buyers Guide

A good night’s sleep can be difficult in a busy tramping hut, particularly when other people are talking, moving around or snoring. The ear plugs on this page give you a choice between washable silicone designs and soft disposable foam plugs.

Reusable Silicone Ear Plugs

The silicone options are best suited to trampers who want to carry the same ear plugs over multiple trips. They are washable, reusable and supplied with compact storage cases to help keep them protected inside your pack.

Our yellow and blue sleeping ear plugs are supplied as two pairs, while the blue waterproof silicone model is supplied as a single pair. The waterproof design can also be useful where keeping water out of the ears is important.

Foam Ear Plugs

Our orange polyurethane foam ear plugs are designed for single use. They are compressed before insertion and then slowly expand to create a close fit inside the ear. The supplied product information states an SNR rating of 35dB.

There are two pack sizes available:

  • 6 ear plugs with 3 storage boxes: a compact option for occasional hut stays, travel or keeping separate pairs in different bags.
  • 120 ear plug bulk pack: better suited to frequent users who want a larger supply of disposable foam plugs available at home or for repeated trips.

Silicone or Foam Ear Plugs?

If reducing waste and reusing the same pair is important, the silicone options are the more suitable choice. They can be washed after use and stored in their supplied case.

If you prefer a fresh pair each time, the foam models are the better match. The 6-piece pack suits occasional use, while the 120-piece bottle offers a much lower cost per pair for regular use.

Using Foam Ear Plugs Correctly

For the foam models, roll each plug into a narrow cylinder with clean hands, gently pull the top of the ear upward and backward, insert the compressed plug and allow it to expand. Correct insertion helps create a more effective seal.

Ear plugs reduce noise rather than eliminating every sound. They should not be worn when driving, operating equipment or in situations where hearing surrounding sounds is important for safety.
