Folding Knives – Buyer’s Guide for NZ Outdoor Use
Our folding knives are built for New Zealand’s outdoor conditions, whether you’re hiking, tramping, camping, or looking for an everyday carry tool. With local stock and delivery in 1–3 working days, it’s easy to find the right knife for your needs.
How to Choose the Right Folding Knife
Select a knife based on your intended use, carry style, and key features like locking blades, carabiner clips, or belt hooks.
- Compact and lightweight options – Models with carabiners (140 mm in red, green, pink, or blue) weigh only 30 grams and are perfect for clipping onto packs or belt loops for fast access.
- Utility and field knives – Choose 200–220 mm knives with belt clips and locking blades for more robust jobs like cutting rope, fire prep, or food use on long hikes.
- Classic woodgrain handle knives – These offer a more traditional feel with better grip in wet or cold conditions, ideal for tramping and multi-day adventures.
Recommended Knife Sizes
140–160 mm: Ideal for general outdoor use, ultralight hiking, and everyday tasks. 200–220 mm: Best for more intensive use and those needing a larger, stronger grip and longer blade reach.
Features to Consider
- Blade locks – Prevent accidental closing. Recommended for safety during heavy use.
- Unassisted opening – Safer and more compliant with NZ laws compared to spring-assisted or automatic models.
- Glass breakers – Available on some 220 mm models, useful for car kits or emergencies.
New Zealand Knife Laws
In New Zealand, folding pocket knives are legal to own and carry in public if there is a lawful purpose – such as for work, tramping, camping, fishing, or other recreational use. However:
- You must not carry a knife in public for self-defence or without good reason.
- Spring-assisted, automatic-opening, and concealed knives are restricted or prohibited.
- Our folding knives feature manual opening and do not fall under prohibited categories (as at 16/07/2025).
Always check with your local Police station or NZ Police weapon guidelines if you’re unsure.
Quick Selection Tips
- Day hikers: Go light with a 140 mm knife with carabiner clip.
- Overnight trampers: Use 200 mm+ knives with belt clips and blade locks.
- Collectors or EDC: Choose wood-handle or high-grip options with classic folding mechanisms.
