Some Tips on How to Choose the Right Sleeping Bag
Choosing the right down sleeping bag comes down to matching the temperature rating to the conditions you expect. New Zealand temperatures change quickly, so always check seasonal forecasts for the region you're visiting. For example, summer nights on the Abel Tasman Coast Track may sit around 8–12°C, while winter trips in Fiordland can drop below freezing.
Altitude also lowers temperatures. As a general guide, expect the temperature to fall by roughly 1°C for every 150 metres of elevation gained. A night at 1200 m on the Tongariro Alpine Crossing will feel far colder than a campsite near sea level, even in the same season.
Your shelter affects warmth too. Huts hold heat better and reduce wind chill, so a bag with a higher comfort rating may still be suitable. Tents lose warmth more easily, especially in exposed alpine areas, so choose a bag with a lower comfort limit if you plan to camp outside.
Think about your destination, the time of year, and whether you will sleep in a hut or a tent. Match these factors with the comfort range shown on each product. This helps ensure your down sleeping bag provide consistent warmth throughout your trip.
